Solutions to prevent premature coil failure

What does Weatherproof Coil Shield do? Weatherproof Coil Shield (WCS) is engineered to stop the corrosive effects of coastal salt fog on condenser coils.

How long does WCS last? Conditions vary widely. Winds, tides, and proximity to the ocean are all factors that determine corrosive rates. To help obtain a standard, accelerated weathering chambers are used to determine corrosion rates. In the field, it is recommended that WCS be replaced every year under severe conditions, and less often under milder conditions.

How does an accelerated weathering chamber work? The general idea is to subject the specimen to salt fog for extended periods in a controlled environment. In the case of WCS, treated coils were exposed to salt fog, then UV light accompanied by high temperatures, and an industrial atmosphere containing sulfur dioxide. WCS was exposed for 1,500 hours with no corrosive damage to coil fins. The test was then continued until fins on untreated coils were falling off copper tubing. WCS specimens were structurally intact at the end of this 4,000 hour test period.

I send my coils out to have them epoxy dipped. How does WCS compare to epoxy coatings? Look at your salt-spray life data from your coating supplier. Chances are WCS meets or exceeds their testing times.

I wind up spending about $500 to $1,000 per coil for epoxy coating. How does WCS compare? WCS can be applied right at your location, with no special equipment or training, for $20 to $100 per condenser coil depending on size.

I can purchase a kit for epoxy or silica coating so I can do it myself and save money. However, the application times seem to be long. How do these compare with WCS? To adequately prepare and apply either of these products, you’ll be looking at 3 or more hours per coil of manpower. With WCS, you will be looking at 10 to 15 minutes max. per coil.

I know that thick coatings will reduce my condenser heat transfer. Since I have many PTAC units, I am concerned I might see a energy increase if I use epoxy or silica coatings. How does WCS compare? Measurements show no heat transfer reduction with WCS.

Is WCS flammable? No.

What container sizes is WCS available in? WCS is sold in gallon containers. A 50 ton condenser unit will take about one gallon, while 1/2 pint is suitable for smaller units. Contact our customer service department to determine what you need for your units.
