Cooling towers pull dirt and other abrasive particles from the air by washing millions of cubic feet of air daily. These particles wind up in the cooling tower sump until they are physically removed.
Cooling water is continuously returned to the chiller unit for cooling during chiller operation. High velocity water volume pumped from the bottom of the tower can easily reach 1,500 gallons per minute and higher. This tremendous flow at high velocity, along with the abrasive particles found in the tower sump, causes major problems on internal chiller surfaces.
In addition to the erosion and abrasion caused by recirculated water, the internal system metals are also contending with possible chemical induced corrosion.
